Founded in 1854 when 8 members signed a covenant that read, in part, that we will “receive all as equal in Christ irrespective of color or condition in life and promise to watch over them in all Christian fidelity and tenderness.”
Since then, First UCC has sought to make sure that all who enter here experience the love of God without condition, and irrespective of condition in life. We have expanded our embrace not just to people of all colors and races, but to people of every gender identity and sexual orientation. We are fully open to and affirming of your identity as a fellow traveler on the way – and call ourselves to create the safe space you need in order to bring your whole self here and before the God whose image you bear.
Although founded as a Congregational church in 1854, we now proudly claim our identity as a United Church of Christ. We feel a strong desire to unite with all people of faith, if not in doctrine then at least in mutual respect in spite of our differences. In fact, no doctrine defines us. We invite all who seek to engage with the sacred to come as they are, believe in things that matter most to them, share authentically from the wisdom of their lived experiences, and contribute what and when they can to the shaping and building of the beloved community we all seek to belong to.
Know that you are welcome here. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. We stand ready to receive you and welcome you into our home.
